An Elder in the Primitive Baptist church is the Title of a minister, not a layperson. They do not believe in using the title of Rev. (Reverend) for men as that is the title only reserved for God. Squire was a minister in the Primitive Baptist church. I've done my research and consulted with the Primitive Baptist librarian, Elder Robert Webb, of the Primitive Baptist library in Carthage, Illinois.
