Dr. Roosevelt Brooks, 83, one of Chicago’s foremost Ophthalmologists, passed away Sunday night at Grant Hospital. The son of a carpenter, Dr. Brooks was born in Birmingham, Ala., in 1902 and came to Chicago in 1920 after he graduated from high school. He attended Lewis Institute and later received a scholarship to the University of Illinois. After completing his undergraduate studies he helped pay his way through the university’s medical school by working as a waiter. He served his internship in Provident Hospital and then began specializing in eye diseases at the University of Illinois.

Dr. Brooks, was certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology in 1937 and was a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology. He was the first black physician on the faculty of the University of Illinois Medical School, which he joined in 1937, and served as instructor of Ophthalmology from 1933 to 1951. In 1946 he was elected a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

Dr. Brooks is survived by a son, Richard; a sister, Louise Robinson of Omaha, Neb. And many nieces and nephews. Funeral services at Cage Memorial Chapel. Burial at Lincoln Cemetery.
