Claxton was an intelligent man and somewhat of a jack of all trades, and master of a few. Before his death he managed a five-star restaurant in Jacksonville, Florida, and also managed his painting company. He served as a United States Merchant Marine. He had three sons, Charles, Keith, and Scott. He was a brilliant writer and wrote with impeccable penmanship. He died as a result of lung cancer and was cremated at Evergreen Cemetery Crematory in Jacksonville. Per his wishes, his ashes were lovingly strewn in ocean at Vilano Beach in St. Augustine, Florida, by his wife, Billy Jean Pollock Davis.
