OAKLAND - Erland Paul Bacon, Jr., 76, passed to the presence of the Lord on Sunday, July 1, 2018, at Glenridge Rehabilitation and Long-Term Care Center in Augusta after a long struggle with Alzheimer's.
Paul, the eldest son of Erland Sr. and Gertrude Bacon, graduated from Waterville High School, class of 1960. While growing up, he helped in his dad's many businesses
Paul and Alayne married April 8, 1978, at Kittery Point Baptist Church. Paul frequently said that marrying Alayne was one of the best things in his life.
Paul had a long career in building bridges throughout Maine, Maryland, and Virginia for Cianbro and Stetson and Watson, retiring in 2009.
Paul was involved in the Waterville Masonic Lodge #33, Scottish Rite Valley of Augusta, Kora Shrine Temple of Lewiston, Scottish Rite Consistory Valley of Portland, and Martha Washington Chapter #15 of the Order of the Eastern Star, serving as Patron (1982-1983). He served as Shrine Ambassador Chairman for five years, and President of the Kennebec Valley Shrine Club (2010). He received TD Bank Home Court Heroes 2011-2012 from the Red Claws for his work in fundraising for the Shrine Hospital in Springfield, Mass.
Paul was a member of Riverside Baptist Church in Clinton. He had been an active member of Oakland United Baptist Church, serving as Trustee, Chair of Trustees, and all around behind the scene servant.
Paul is survived by his wife of 40 years, Alayne; his children, Susan Lovell of Rollingford, NH, Janice Harden of Boardman, Ohio, and Arvid Bacon of Portsmouth, NH; his stepchildren, Robert Burdick of Wilton and Brenda Burdick of Clinton, Ky.; grandchildren, Shana Beauregard, Sheila Lovell, Shyanne Lovell, Taylor Harden, Darren Bacon, Colin Bacon, Miranda Bacon, Samantha Burdick, Kaitlyn Burdick, Megan Burdick, Rashida Burdick, Ravaeh Burdick; three great-grandchildren, Aiden, Amber, and Gemma; four brothers, Charles, Roger, Wendell, and Sheldon; his aunt Francis Pooler; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Paul always had a story about a bridge or some experience he had with his dad or growing up years.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. on Friday, July 6, at Riverside Baptist Church, Clinton, on the corner of Hinckley-Clinton Bridge. A Masonic service will be held at the same time. A reception in the fellowship area will immediately follow. Interment will be at Pond Cemetery, Unity.
The family would like to thank the staff of Glenridge Long Term Care Center for their care of Paul.
