Gary arrived in Vietnam for duty on July 18, 1970 where he was assigned to and served with D Company, 4th Battalion, 503d Infantry, 173d Airborne Brigade, USARV.
On April 3, elements of D Company were on a combat operation in the Soui Ca valley approximately 1 kilometer south of the Van Canh airfield in Binh Dinh Provice when suddenly a mine was detonated and the soldiers came under enemy attack. During the ensuing fire fight 6 men were killed in action before the enemy broke contact. One of the casualties was SSG Butt who was killed in action by fragmentation wounds from a hostile explosive dievice.
