Opal was born into a family living in the 1920's. It was a hard time, but a free and beautiful time. They lived on the prairie of western Kansas in the middle of nowhere. She grew up living in a home built into the early with a sod roof. It protected them from the thunder storms, prairie fires, tornados, dust storms and roaming animals. There were few neighbors, and those were way in the distance. On Sundays they would pile into the buckboard and go to town, to church and to shop...but mainly to see people and visit. They lived off the land, growing food and raising animals. her older sister, Hazel made Opal's clothes and in time, taught her to make her own doll clothes, and then her own. She attended a one-room school house down the road a piece...she loved school and learning.

Her happiest times were spent in her yard planting and tending flowers and trees, vegetables. From her growing up days on the western Kansas prairie, she craved the sunshine. She had grown up in dark times and the sun was life giving to her. She married the love of her life, Alan, who was a city boy, but he wanted to be a farmer. She helped him achieve his dream on the five acres in Arvada.

She learned to cook as a young girl, and made wonderful meals. She loved reading throughout her life. It was a way to travel, learn and spend time somewhere else...unknown, exciting places. She shared that love of reading by reading out loud to her children. She composed poetry and short stories. She wrote a children's story and illustrated it. She lived her life through creating, in her thoughts, her words, in drawing and painting, doing crafts, sewing, cooking, in decorating her home, organizing events, quilting and so much more. Wherever she was she strove to create a pleasant, warm and comfortable living space. She left bits of herself in everything she did.

Opal was instrumental in developing the Colorado Quilting Council, and traveled all over the state promoting it. She also became involved in the Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum. She was a docent for the exhibits, and worked in the office as Assistant to the Director for years. She was the one who remembered the history of the museum that Eugenia Mitchell had dreamed into being, and passed it on to those who took over the reins. Over the years, she created and donated over 12 quilts to be raffled raising thousands of dollars for the museum.

During her lifetime, Opal has been a loyal friend; eager volunteer and helper, a wife and companion; a mother and grandmother and great grandmother, great, great grandmother; a sister and aunt and has been liked and loved by many. She lived 96 years and lived them to the fullest, cherishing the friends she had, lifting her face to the sun, trusting in God and leaving a legacy of people whose lives she touched, and a family who will continue on with their lives remembering the values she lived and taught, and the love she had for them.
Words of her children.
