Michael was my Gr Gr Grandfather.Parents unknown.Married Sarah Ann Wier. Michael served in Civil War Bet. September 28, 1861 - December 7, 1862 Pvt.,Co.G,79th Pa. Vol. Medical Discharge; hypertrophy of heart.
Obituary - Lancaster Intelligencer Journal - Dec. 14,1906
In 1860, he was a laborer presumably living in or near Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, although he is not found in neither the 1850 nor 1860 census in Lancaster County.
A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Enlisted at the stated age of thirty-three in Lancaster September 30, 1861, mustered into federal service there October 4 as a private with Co. G, 79th Pennsylvania Infantry, but discharged by surgeon's certificate to date December 7, 1862. On February 2, 1863, he applied for a disability pension and received it.
2. Nonetheless, he enlisted at the stated age of thirty-five in Lancaster June 20, 1863, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg June 30 as a private with Co. H in the six-month organization of the 20th Pennsylvania Cavalry (181st Pa), but deserted to date July 5, 1863. Not surprisingly, Michael did not list this aborted service in the 1890 Veterans Schedule.
He married Sarah Ann Wier or Weir, fifteen years his junior, ca. 1865 and fathered Adam (b. @1865), Jacob (b. @1868), Emerson (b. 05/??/70), Ann (b. 05/02/72 - married James Franklin Reynolds), Elizabeth (b. 06/12/75 - married James A. Horst), Adaline (b. 06/12/78 - married Abram Casper Evans and George M. Gardner), and Susan A. & Barbara A. (b. ca. 10/??/79). None of the first four children appears in the 1880 census, and he was living alone in the 1900 census in Rapho Township, so the fate of the twins is also unknown. His obituaries mention a stepson Harry Lewis who was not otherwise found.
He died at his daughter Adaline's home from "cardiac dropsy & organic heart disease."
The birth year show above is questionable, beginning with the two stated ages at enlistment, both of which agree with a ca. 1828 birth year. His death certificate reports an 1826 birth year, but that document is undependable for births prior to January 1, 1906. As usual, the censuses only confound the situation. The 1870 census lists him as a forty-two-year-old while 1880 claims he had regressed to the age of forty, which is certainly an error. Only in the the 1900 census is the July 1826 birth date found, but births in that census frequently are at odds with other reports. His obituaries take the discussion even further afield by claiming he died at the age of eighty-five.

Michael K.Young of Sporting Hill died at 9:00 A.M. Thursday at the home of his son in law, Abraham Evans 17 South Mary St. from old age. He was 85. During the Civil War he served as a Pvt.,Co.G,79th Regt., Pa. Vol. He was a member of Baptist Brethren Church near Sporting Hill. He is survived by the following children: Mrs. Fanny Reynolds, Mrs. Lizzie Horst, Mrs. Addie Evans, and stepson Harry Lewis.
