Mathew D. Del Fatti was born on April 21, 1935, in Midland, Ore., on his grandparents' family ranch to Mathew and Julia Del Fatti. He passed away at his home on March 17, 2018. He was 82.
Matt grew up in Klamath Falls. He graduated from Klamath Union High School and then attended Oregon State University. He graduated with a master's degree in horticulture. After college, Matt enlisted in the U.S. Army. He was stationed in Wiesbaden, Germany. Matt was grateful for his experience in the Army because he said he was able to travel to countries he may never have been able to go to without the government's help. He often talked about spending his 21st birthday in Paris, France.
When Matt returned home, he went to work for Nyback's Flowers. He specialized in working with silk flowers and provided much of the decorations for the annual open houses that used to precede the Christmas holiday seasons. He also went to FTD conventions, where he was hired by the various florist wholsesalers to showcase their products for the upcoming seasons. He worked for Nyback's Flowers until his retirement in 1997.
In the early 1970s, Matt enjoyed hunting arrowheads, mainly in the Warner Valley. Many weekends, he would get up before dawn and travel to Crump Lake. He enjoyed the high desert and Hart Mountain was a favorite destination. He also had an appreciation for Native American baskets. He saw the crafstmanship and beauty in them and realized they are truly works of art.
Matt was a lover of reading and local history. When he was interested in a subject, he would collect and read everything he could find about it. It was that love of reading that enabled him to become somewhat of an expert on many subjects. Whether it was Native American history and artifacts or different types of vintage glassware, people came to him and asked questions. Matt either knew the answer or where to look to find one.
After his retirement, he knew he needed to supplement his income so he began collecting items to sell in consignment booths. He specialized in vintage glassware which he did until his death.
Matt enjoyed flowers of all kinds and had a beautiful yard which he took great pride in. He always hated to see winter come because it lasted so long. When the days started getting longer, you could find him in the garden checking on the bulbs. He enjoyed the arrival of the spring flowers. Bearded Iris and Day Lilies were some of his favorite flowers.
Matt is survived by his sister and brother-in-law Roxanne and Ken Moody of Keno, Ore.; sister-in-law Marilyn Del Fatti of Baker City, Ore.; nephew and wife Brian and Kelly Del Fatti of Lake Oswego, Ore.; niece Markay Arntz of Baker City; niece and husband Lisa and Shane Winton of Shasta Lake, Calif.; niece and husband Julie and David Harper of Klamath Falls; great-niece and husband Allie and Levi Sprie of Sherwood, Ore., and great-nephews Kyle and Kirby Del Fatti of Lake Oswego, Aiden Arntz of Baker City, and Garrett Winton, Shasta Lake.
