Velma "Sally" Bruening, 93, of 1831 Cherry Lane, died Thursday, June 14, 2018, at Good Samaritan Home. She was born July 8, 1924, in Honey Creek Township, Mendon, the daughter of the late Oren W. and Katherine B. (Campbell) Adair.
Sally graduated from Unity High School. On May 1, 1948, she married Frank H. Bruening at St. Edward Catholic Church, Mendon. She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Sally was a lead office clerk for the test department of Gates Radio Co., a division of Harris-Intertype Corp., where she met her husband. Sally worked there for 21 years until her retirement.
In the past, Sally participated with RSVP as a receptionist at Quincy College, United Way's Help Line, the nursing department at John Wood Community College, Adams County Health Department and Senior Citizens Center. She had been involved in the social committee of St. Mary Catholic Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus Auxiliary. She was also a member of South Side Boat Club and the Ladies of St. Francis. Sally liked to volunteer because she liked meeting people and the challenge of doing different things.
Sally loved to travel, camp, do needlework and read. She was available at any given moment to help her children and grandchildren. She also loved her dogs, Dusty and Dixie and her cat, Kitty.
She is survived by three children, Bruce (Sandra) Bruening of Mendon, Diana (Bill) Bockenfeld of Quincy and Debra Liebig of Quincy; nine grandchildren, Chad (Brittany) Bruening, Marty (Catherine) Bruening, Kelly (Jared) Flora, Brent (Heather) Bockenfeld, Brooke (Dr. Alan) Richardson, Shaun (Dawn) Bruening, Kristin (Justin) Six, Travis (Kristen) Liebig and Brandi (Cory) VonderHaar; 16 great-grandchildren, Audrey and Amelia Bruening, Eli and Emmalynn Bruening, Della and Brix Bockenfeld, Ian and Sydney Richardson, Addison, Breckett and Creedyn Bruening, Leah Six, Jack and Abigail Liebig, Brooklyn and Blake VonderHaar; siblings, Carol J. (Paul) Obert and Sharon Kay (Alan) Dempsey; and numerous other nieces, nephews and other relatives.
In addition to her husband, Sally was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Philip W. Bruening; a son-in-law, John W. Liebig; two sisters, V. Bernice Rogers Wellman and Marilyn M. Woodworth; her brother, Kenneth Adair; and a sister-in-law, Florence Loos.
SERVICES: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 19, at Duker and Haugh Funeral Home, and 11 a.m. Tuesday at Blessed Sacrament Church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
VISITATION: 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, June 18, at the funeral home.
MEMORIALS: Quincy Humane Society or Diabetes Association.
