Bernice (Rogers) Wellman, 86, of Mendon, died at 5:40 p.m. Saturday (Feb. 21, 2009) in Blessing Hospital, Quincy.
Bernice was born June 1, 1922, in Adams County to Oren and Katherine (Campbell) Adair. She married Robert Rogers on March 25, 1944, in Pasaiic, N.J. He died June 25, 1986. She later married Wilfred Wellman on July 1, 1988. He died Jan. 8, 2004.
Bernice attended Mount Vernon Grade School and later attended Camp Point High School. She was a member of St. Edwards Catholic Church in Mendon and was also a member of the Altar Society. Bernice enjoyed traveling, gardening and birdwatching, and she especially loved watching the neighborhood children.
She is survived by one son, Robert Rogers and his wife, Ginger, of Loraine; two daughters, Nancy Veile and her husband, James, of Ursa, and Michelle Van Blair and her husband, Steven, of Fowler; four grandchildren, Stacy Rogers of Loraine, Scott Rogers and his wife, Sarah, of Payson, Kristie Bradshaw and her husband, Doug, of Payson, and Craig Veile and his wife, Julie, of Bloomington; seven great-grandchildren; three sisters, Velma Bruening of Quincy, Carol Obert and her husband, Paul, of Gibson City, and Kay Dempsey and her husband, Alvin, of Quincy; and a sister-in-law, Ruth Haire of Quincy. She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Marilyn Woodworth; one brother, Kenneth Adair; and one great-grandson, Levi Rogers.
SERVICES: A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Edwards Catholic Church, Mendon, with the Rev. Jeff Stone conducting. Burial will be in the Mendon Cemetery.
VISITATION: 6 to 8 p.m. Monday in the Hunter Funeral Home, Mendon, with a prayer service at 5:30 p.m.
MEMORIALS: St. Edwards Catholic Church or to the North Adams Home.
