Frances Croom Norfleet, 74, slipped peacefully into eternal rest on Saturday, June 2, 2018, at Stoddard Baptist Care Center, Washington, D.C.

Born on Feb. 22, 1944, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Mary Croom Hines. Frances was reared in the home of her grandparents, the late Frank and Emmaline Howard Croom. They taught her the importance of developing a relationship with Christ and attending church.

She accepted Christ and joined Wayman Chapel AME Church. After moving to Washington, D.C., she joined Peace Baptist Church and later became a member of New Mount Olive Baptist Church, Washington, D.C. Frances attended public schools in Sumter and furthered her education after moving to Washington, D.C. She was employed at Smithsonian Institution for more than 30 years and then worked at the D.C. Landlord and Tenant Board, following her retirement from the Smithsonian.

Precious memories will be cherished by her grandson, Deon Jones; granddaughter, Mona Jones; brothers, Samuel Peterson of Greenville, Tennessee, and Johnnie Coplin of Connecticut; five nieces, Annette "Jennifer" Montgomery and Genova Billups of Sumter, LaShane (George) Sutton of Mount Olive, North Carolina, Julia (Brian) Williams of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, and Jimmel Brown of Washington, D.C.; three aunts, Geneva Croom Montgomery of Union, New Jersey, Inez Croom of Sumter and Mary C. Croom of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; a cousin, Queen Mack of Wedgefield; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services: Wayman Chapel AME Church, 160 N. Kings Highway, Sumter, with the Rev. Dr. Dennis Broughton Jr., pastor, eulogist.

Burial: Wayman Chapel AME Churchyard Cemetery.

These services have been entrusted to the management and staff of Williams Funeral Home Inc., 821 N. Main St., Sumter.
