James M. Speaker enlisted in Company D, 11th Texas Cavalry, in Hopkins County, Texas, in October, 1861. He was elected Junior 2nd Lieutenant on May 8, 1862, and promoted to 1st Lt., August 10, 1863. For much of the war, he commanded his company. Lt. Speaker was captured near Rome, Georgia, on October 13, 1864, and spent the remainder of the war in Camp Douglas, Illinois, before being released on June 17, 1865.

James M. Speaker had a brother also enlist in his company, Byron K. Speaker, who later transferred to Douglas' Texas Battery.

James M. Speaker was the uncle of baseball Hall of Famer, Tris Speaker
