Melville Allison Speaker was the son of Henry Speaker and Elizabeth ("Eliza") Moore.

On the 1850 Census, New London, Huron County, Ohio, Melville appeared in the household of his parents, Henry and Eliza Speaker, where his brothers, Byron and James, also resided. On the 1860 Census, Tarrant, Hopkins County, Texas, Melville appeared in the household of his parents, Henry and Eliza Speaker, where his brothers, Byron and James, also resided. This family was not found on the 1870 Census.

On the 1880 Census, San Joaquin County, California, Byron Speaker (1839 - 1881), who was single, resided in Stockton; James Speaker (1843 - 1937) and his family resided in Stockton; and Melville Speaker (1845 - 1885) and his family resided in Castoria. It appears that the three brothers migrated together from Texas to make their home in San Joaquin County, California; all three lived out their lives in California.

Melville married Martha Jane ("Mattie") Buchanan, daughter of James M. Buchanan and Mary Ann E. Simmons, on September 2, 1875, in San Joaquin County, California; they were married until his death by an accidental gunshot wound sustained while dove hunting. The couple had six children, all sons, namely:

EDWARD FREDERICK SPEAKER (1882 - 1987); and
MELVILLE LIONEL SPEAKER, aka Mervin Allison Speaker
(October 15, 1885, Stockton, San Joaquin County, CA - unknown).

The youngest son, Melville Lionel Speaker, who was born two months after the death of his father, appeared as "Meloin Freshour" on the 1900 Census, Santa Rosa, Sonoma County, California, in the household of his stepfather and his mother, George and Mattie Freshour; his birth month was shown as October, and his birth year was shown as 1886, which was one year late. Melville Lionel Speaker's World War I Draft Registration, taken as of September 12, 1918, showed his birth date as November 15, 1885 [sic-October 15, 1885] and his residence as Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz County, California; his nearest relative was "Alice E. [(Buchanan)] Lamar, Aunt", the younger sister of his late mother, Martha Jane ("Mattie") (Buchanan) [Speaker] Freshour. By November 1936 when he appeared on the U.S. Social Security Applications and Claims Index, 1936-2007, he had changed his name to Mervin Allison Speaker; he was shown as born on October 15, 1885, in Stockton, [San Joaquin County,] California, the son of Melville Speaker [Ancestry.com].
