Maude was an artist. She was a painter and wrote music; she was known nationwide for her work. She was born on the Mitchell family farm three miles so of Wamego in Wabaunsee Co. Maude received her early education at district school in Wabaunsee Co. She attended NY State Normal College at Buffalo, NY. After graduation she taught district school near Manhattan for a time. Mitchell graduated from Columbia University School of Art in NYC in 1900. She studied at Art Students League there and spent some time at art colony in Woodstock, NY. Miss Mitchell served as Art supervisor in public schools in Dubuque, Iowa for nearly 13 yrs. as head of art dept. Plattville State Normal school Plattville, Wis. In 1915 her mother passed away and she returned to KS to take care of the Mitchell farm. Continuing her interest in art, she became well known as a Kansas artist of note. Her paintings were frequently displayed in Kansas City and Topeka. Many area residents took lessons from Miss Mitchell, some of her former students are painting today. Occasionally she went to Fl to visit her brother, Raymond in Claremond, FL where she would paint Florida landscapes. She was also an accomplished musician and composed "Prairie Roads A Winden" "Riden in the Rain" "The Dance of Romance", only a few of what she composed. Her many other accomplishments including the murals for Columbia University and designed the gateway which was erected in 1952 at the Wabaunsee Township Cemetery on K-18. Her poetry, editorials and cartoons were published in various publications. Maude is buried in Wabaunsee TWP Cemetery near K-18, behind a stone entry arch she designed. A sketch of an artist palette and brushes is engraved on her tombstone with the Motto "Her art gave joy to all" Wamego Times Extra 9/28/89
