In a history book on Knox Co., Il, on page 61 and 62 for Chestnut Township from Sketch by H. M. Reece in 1899 reads as follows: "Among the early settlers should be mentioned O. P. Barton. He was famous in those times as a pedestrian, and gave repeated evidence of his prowess and power of endurance in this description of excercise. Once, starting on foot at the same time with several horseman for the land office at Quincy, one hundred miles distant, he out stripped them all, securing the prize offered to the winner of the race which consisted of forty acres of government land in section 17."

Ozias P. Barton died at his home in Chestnut twp., Sat., Oct. 2, at 1:00 p.m., age 81 yrs. 6 mo. 28 days. The deceased was born in Wayne Co., N.Y., Mar., 4, 1816. He was married to Rachel Massie, Dec. 5, 1836, in Jackson Co., Ohio. They moved to Knox Co., Ill., in 1839, where they resided since. Their married life was one of happiness for over 50 years, when his wife died. To them were born eleven children, of whom but five survive the deceased. He leaves one brother, Barnard of Toulon, Stark Co., Ill. and five sons, Alpheus of Delong, Ill., David C., of Douglas Co. Ks., Almon H., of Hermon, Ill., Enos O. of Rice Co., Ks., and Horace B. of Missouri, fifty grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church in Hermon. Rev. S. H. Humphry of Galesburg officated.
