Aunt Irene has always been my favorite Aunt. She was born on March 25, 1905 which would have made her eight years old when my mother was born. I wrote to her and asked her about her early memories of my mother (Florence who is pictured with Irene) and she related that Grandma was likely to take a nap anywhere including the cistern where rain water was stored which got very hot when the sun was shining and also in the road which was very dangerous as she could have been trampled by horses coming down the road. She related that mom and her would often laugh when they remembered that Mom would pout and say "I won't eat", if she did not get her way. As adults, that was funny, as both Aunt Irene and mom, although not fat, always had to fight the battle of the bulge.

Aunt Irene always seemed to be in a good mood and I never remember her or Uncle Ed relating a cross word to anyone. We used to go visit them in Croswell when were were kids and it was quite different than Detroit. We had so much fun in a little town. We used to go to the show by sneaking in the back door and play in the acres and acres of undeveloped land. They had a swinging rope bridge which crossed over the Black River. The population of Croswell today is 2,073 but I am sure it was much less in the 1940's.
