George Everie Akehurst, 59, of Stafford, died on Saturday, July 19, of a heart attack, at his home.

Mr. Akehurst, a security guard at Urban Security in Fredericksburg, had served a total of 21 years in the military.

He was in the Navy during World War II, and was aboard the USS Houston II, a light cruiser, when it was torpedoed In the Battle of Formosa, on 14 October, 1944, and managed to limp to safety. During the Korean War, he served in the Army as a combat engineer, in Germany and France.

After he retired in 1967, he was a security guard and art instructor at Lorton, for the D. C. Dept. of Corrections, for a number of years.

He was born in Baltimore, the son of George E. Akehurst, Sr. and Emma Hare Akehurst.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred Haddaway Akehurst; two daughters, Paula Garrison of Spotsylvania, and Jolene Rockwell of Stafford; two sons, George Akehurst of Jersey City, and Casey Akehurst of Stafford; a sister, Mrs. Angela Akehurst Campbell, of Woodlawn, Md; a brother, David Akehurst of Frederick, Md., and one granddaughter.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Susan, in 1975. A memorial service was held at the Wheeler and Thompson Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert Warner officiating.

The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the Stafford County Volunteer Rescue Squad, Box 414, Stafford, Va. 22554.
