Calvin C. Goetz, or "Big Cal" as he was known to his family, was born the son of Adolph Nicholas Goetz (1888-1985) and Eliza Maria Bevins (1895-1977) on the 7 October 1923 in New Hartford, Litchfield Co., Connecticut. He grew up in Pine Meadows, which is also in Litchfield County, in a home that is located near Chapin Park.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Yorktown; and was aboard it during the Battle of Midway in 1942. Although he survived this attack by the Japanese and the sinking of the Yorktown, Cal would always carry this tragic event with him.

In 1951, he married Aline Balla (1924-), the daughter of Alexander Balla (1886-1950) and Julia Molnar(1885-1962) in California. Aline also served in the war, in the WAC (Women's Army Corps). They had two sons, Calvin and Mark.

Cal passed away on the 18 October 2000 in Anaheim Memorial Hospital. He was survived by his wife, both sons, and a granddaughter, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was cremated and his ashes were scattered in Chapin Park in Pine Meadows, near his family home.
