Obediah S. Winters was the 1st of 9 children of Moses Winters and his first wife, Sarah Rogers.
He was born in Ohio, perhaps Clermont County where his father is listed in the 1830 census. He moved with his family to Lawrence Township, Marion County, Indiana, in 1836 or 1837 and they were residing there at the time he enlisted. He served in Company D, 4th Regiment, Indiana Volunteer Infantry, mustered in May 28, 1847, at Jeffersonville, Indiana, by Captain Gatlin. He died at Puebla, Mexico, on December 5, 1847. He is not known to have married.
His death occurred 2 months after the Siege of Puebla, the last major conflict of the war. However, typhus and diarrhea were common ailments at the Puebla garrison due to unsanitary conditions.
