Bicyclist, 10, Dies Following Collision Just East of City
A 10-year old Stevens Point boy died at St. Michael's Hospital today from injuries suffered Friday evening when a car rammed his bicycle from behind on Highway 10 just east of the city.
Daniel J. Przybylski, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jerome Przybylski, 1220 Sims Ave., died at St. Michael's Hospital about 12:19 this morning. Medical authorities said he suffered head and neck injuries.
Also hurt in the mishap and hospitalized today was another bicyclist. Tony Korger, 15, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Korger, 1216 College Ave., suffered a broken toe and bruises.
County Police and Cornoner Joseph Bodzislaw continued checking this morning into details of the mishap, Portage County's 100th road death this year. But officers said that from initial investigation the following account was pieced together:
Around 6:50 p.m., the two boys were riding their bikes west on Highway 10, apparently returning home after visiting the Iverson Park area. They were believed to have been riding single file along the right side of the highway, Korger in the lead, when a westbound car driven by Anton J. Duffek, 57, of Custer struck the rear of the Przybylski boy's bike. The collision occurred on a downhill slope some 500 feet east of the Plover River.
After the impact, Daniel's bike apparently hit the Korger bike, shoving it and its rider off the right side of the road. The car with the Przybylski boy's bike jammed into its right front, traveled some distance down the road before stopping. The boy's shoe, apparently marking point of impact, was found about 180 feet east of the body.
When officers arrived, young Przybylski was lying on the roadway about 30-35 feet ahead of the car. Officers had to use a crow bar to pry the bike loose from the auto.
The boys were taken to the hospital by city ambulance.
Riding with Duffek when the accident happened were two youngsters who were not immediately identified. Authorities said they may have been Duffek's children.
Funeral services for the Przybylski boy will be held Monday at 11:15 a.m. at St. Stanislaus' Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Guardian Angel Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Dzikoski Funeral Home after 3 p.m. Sunday, and the rosary will be recited there Sunday night at 8.
Daniel was born Aug. 8, 1954, in Stevens Point. He would have been a fifth grader at St. Stanislaus' Parochial School this fall. He was a member of Cub Pack 298 at St. Stanislaus'.
Surviving are his father, a driver for the Central Wisconsin Motor Transport Co., Wisconsin Rapids; his mother; two brothers, Wayne, 14, and Lawrence, 13; three sisters, Irene, eight, Dorothy, seven, and Valerie, four; his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John Przybylski, 1304 Water St., and Mr. and Mrs. August Kubowski, 734 Portage St.; and aunts and uncles and other relatives.
