Allen J. Anderson, 89, 2500 Valley View Ave., died Dec. 16, 1997, at a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Steve Sathre officiating.
Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck, with military rites provided by Bismarck Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1326.
Visitation will be from 5-9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Eastgate Funeral Service and at the church one hour before services.
Allen was born July 16, 1908, in St. Thomas, the son of Abel H. and Mabel (Jacobson) Anderson. After receiving a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering in 1933 from the University of North Dakota, Allen joined the North Dakota State Highway Department in 1934.
He retired from the highway department in 1974 after 40 years of service and rising to the level of chief bridge engineer for the state. While serving as chief engineer, the bridge division received three national awards for excellence in steel design.
On June 28, 1938, Allen married Mildred I. Hoff after a courtship that included singing together in the Trinity Lutheran Church Choir and participating in Luther League activities. Mildred preceded him in death.
In July 1942 Allen took a leave of absence from the highway department and joined the U.S. Navy as an officer in the civil engineering corps. He served for 30 months in the War Plans Division of the Bureau of Yards and Docks in Washington, D.C., working on the N.L. Pontoon used by the invitation forces in Sicily and Normandy.
For 14 months, Allen was attached to the Third Brigade of the Seventh Fleet in the South Pacific, ending up in Manila on V-J Day. He retired from the Navy with the rank of commander.
Active in many church and civil organizations, Allen was a member of the board of trustees of Trinity Lutheran Church for five years; chairman of the building committees for Trinity Lutheran Church and Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center; and a member of the board of directors of Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center for eight years.
He served as president of the Capitol Employees Credit Union for three years; and was state president of North Dakota State Highway Employees Association and North Dakota Society of Professional Engineers.
In 1974 he received the Elwyn F. Chandler Award from North Dakota Society of Professional Engineers for Meritorious Service to the Engineering Profession.
Allen enjoyed singing in the church choir, the annual Messiah presentations, golfing, traveling, working on a family history and visiting his sons and grandchildren in Arizona and Texas. He was a member of the Golden “K” Kiwanis and a devout member of Trinity Lutheran Church for more than 60 years.
He is survived by one son and two daughter-in-law, Dr. Ronald Anderson and Rachel Anderson of Nacogdoches, Texas; and Dr. Mary Anderson-Rowland of Tempe, Ariz.; three grandsons, Mark Anderson of Dallas, Taldon Anderson and his wife Tiffany of Bothell, Wash., and Trevon Anderson of Tucson, Ariz.; and one great-grandson, Brevin Anderson of Bothell.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred; his parents; four brothers, John, Oscar I, Norman, and Oscar II; one son, Dr. Bruce Anderson, who died in 1992; and many other relatives.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the music program at Trinity Lutheran Church, Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center, or a charity of their choice.
