Visitation will be from 7 to 9 tonight, 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. to noon Monday at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, and will continue at the church one hour before services. Family members will be at the funeral home from 7 to 9 tonight and 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday.
Mildred Hoff was born July 17, 1902, in Volga, S.D., the daughter of John and Regina (Dahl) Hoff, receiving her early education in the Volga Public Schools. She later enrolled at St. Olaf College and earned her bachelor of arts degree there in 1924. A talented musician, Mildred was a member of the St. Olaf Choir during her college years, under the direction of F. Melius Christianson, touring extensively with the choir. She also did graduate work at the University of Minnesota and South Dakota State University.
On June 28, 1938, Mildred married Allen J. Anderson, a civil engineer with the State Highway Department. They had lived in Bismarck except for a short time in Arlington, Va., while Allen was stationed in Washington, D.C., working in the Navy Building as a Navy Lieutenant.
Music played a very important part in Mildred’s life. After coming to Bismarck, she became a piano student of Belle Mehus, a member of the Thursday Music Club and participated as a piano soloist in many community and church programs. She also sang in the Trinity Lutheran Church Choir and in the annual Messiah presentation for many years.
She taught high school English and Latin for more than 25 years in St. Charles, Bemidji, Minn., and Portland, N.D., ending her teaching career at Bismarck junior and senior high schools. Mildred touched the lives of many Bismarck youth in a special way during her years as a beloved and respected teacher.
Her devotion as a member of Trinity Lutheran Church was evidenced by her participation in church activities and church organizations including the quilters, until ill health forced her to relinquish those responsibilities only a few months prior to her death. When Trinity Lutheran moved into its new church, Allen and Mildred started and organized a highly successful Greeter Program.
A 63-year member of PEO Chapter N, Mildred had served as chapter president and as a delegate to the International Convention in Victoria, B.C., in 1941. She also belonged to Fortnightly Club, Golden “K” Kiwanis, and the Bismarck-Mandan Retired Teachers Association.
Mildred is survived by her husband, Allen; one son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Ronald and Rachel Anderson, Nacogdoches, Texas; three grandsons, Taldon Anderson and his wife Tiffany, Santa Monica, Calif., Trevon Anderson, Tempe, Ariz., and Mark Anderson, Dallas. She is also survived by her daughter-in-law, Dr. Mary Anderson-Rowland, Tempe.
She was preceded in death by her parents; many other relatives; and her son Bruce Anderson who died in 1992.
Casketbearers for the funeral service are her three grandsons, Bill Marks, Saul Wezelman and Clarion Larson.
