One of nine Tolar brothers, all born in Cumberland County North Carolina and all volunteered to serve the Confederacy at the beginning of the Civil War. He was a Sergeant in Company B, 10th South Carolina Volunteers. He was wounded at the Battle of Murfreesboro, Tennessee on December 31, 1862. He died in the hospital at Union Gap, Georgia on August 5, 1863.
