One of nine Tolar brothers, all born in Cumberland County North Carolina and all volunteered to serve the Confederacy at the beginning of the Civil War. He was a 1st Lieutenant in Company H. Orr's Rifle Regiment of the South Carolina Volunteers. He was killed at the Battle of the Wilderness on May 5, 1864.
