Dennis Cain was born in Monmouth County, New Jersey, on December 26, 1844, and died of pneumonia June 6, 1912, with burial in Ida Grove, Iowa, Cemetery. He was the son of William and Mary Cain, natives of Roscommon County, Ireland. The parents were married in Ireland, but came to America in the early days and located in New Jersey. In 1856, they took a farm near Libertyville, IL. The mother died there in 1889.
Mr. Cain was the youngest of a family of 9 children and when 13 years old moved with his parents from New Jersey to a farm near Libertyville. In 1861, Mr. Cain began farming in Whiteside County, Illinois. Three years later he enlisted in Co. A, 12 Illinois Cavalry. He served in the western army and was in the Red River Expedition, the Battle of Jackson, Ms., and 7 other engagements. He was engaged in guarding the frontier at Brownsville and Houston, Tx., and was discharged with honors at Houston on June 18, 1866.
After leaving the Army, Mr. Cain engaged in farming again in Illinois, but in 1876 came to Ida County, purchasing the 120 acres in Section 22, Blaine Twp., where he lived for many years and until he and Mrs. Cain moved to Arthur to make their home. They added to the place until they owned 266 acres.
When Mr. Cain came to Iowa, he brought his house with him from Waukegan, IL., a story and a half structure 16 X 24' with two wings 13 X 22' and 12 X 16 ft. He has served as trustee, road overseer, and member of the school board.
He was married in Whiteside County, IL. in 1871 to Miss Anna Scott, daughter of Asa and Elizabeth Taylor Scott. They had 5 children, Asa of Glade Springs, Canada; Clarence of Trocher Valley, Canada; Mrs. Bessie Darnell of Vancouver, Canada; Mrs. Frank Cady, of Carlson Woods, Montana; and Mrs. Hoaglund of Arthur, Iowa.
The funeral was held from the Cain home in Arthur, Iowa, on Monday afternoon and was conducted by Rev. Patterson of the Methodist Church, assisted by Rev. C. Bleakly.
