Minnie Mae (Jane) Estes.
Jane passed away peacefully at home in Roswell, NM. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, April 28, 2018, 11:00 AM at Anderson Bethany Funeral Home, with Pastor, Rick Hale officiating. Per Jane’s wishes, her body will be donated to the Texas Tech Science Center for medical research.
Minnie Mae (Jane) Estes grew up in a loving Christian home, on a farm in southeastern NM, with three sisters and five brothers. She was born at home in Highway, NM, on March 17, 1934, to John Dennis Lott and Mae Lott (Taylor).
Those left to cherish her memories are her son-in-law and daughter, Scott and Leona Avent of Roswell NM; eight grandchildren: Crystal Estes of Columbus, Ohio, Mary Estes of San Diego, California, Brian Stevenson of San Antonio, Texas, Brent Stevenson (Brittany) of Royse City, Texas, Shane Stevenson of San Angelo, TX, Jessica Estes (Justin) of Reno, Nevada, Kersanda DeLaCerda (Jared) of San Diego, California, David Dondi Estes of Petersburg, AK; fourteen great-grandchildren: Sydney Stevenson, Savannah Stevenson, Gotham Stevenson, Tristan Greathouse, Cole Stevenson, Carson Stevenson, Railynn Stevenson, Ryan Stevenson, Parker Stevenson, Cylas Estes, Micah Workman, Shayleigh Tsosie, Gabe Estes, Marley Jane Estes; brother, Homer Lott (Joyce) of Caldwell, Idaho; special in-laws: Sue Lott of Abernathy, Texas, Jerry and June Lackey of Carlsbad, NM, Richard and Peggy Titus of Carlsbad, NM; as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews whom she loved very much.
Jane was preceded in death by her parents; beloved husband, David Neal Estes, Jr.; son, David Timothy Estes; brothers: Wesley Lott, Grant Lott, Oscar Lott, Dee Lott; sisters: Leecy (Sis) Hutchinson, Ethel Stewart, Bernice Lott, Irene Allen; grandchildren: Sanya Estes, Brandon Estes; and great-grandchild, Israel Paz Jr. Estes.
Jane attended school in Highway until her Sophomore year in High School. She then attended Dora High School, where she graduated in 1951. Jane then attended Eastern New Mexico University in Portales, where she graduated in 1954, with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration. While in college, she met and married her husband of fifty-seven years, David Neal Estes, Jr. Jane and David were married 4/5/1953, on an Easter Sunday and until his death they were inseparable. After one year as a secretary in San Diego, California, they decided they really enjoyed summer vacations and returned to ENMU-Portales, to get the necessary courses to become teachers. Their first teaching experience was in Lazbuddie, TX. After two years there, they decided they wanted to see the world and sought an overseas job. That job took them to Kwajalein in the Marshall Islands with the US Navy School. After a year of teaching on the Islands, they moved back to Anaheim, California. Jane taught for one year before becoming a stay at home mom to their two children. Years later she taught in Roswell, Pueblo Pintado and Seboyeta, NM, as well as raising her three grandchildren and with David staying at home with them while she taught. During their years together they traveled all over the United States, Jerusalem and Turkey. After retirement and Daves’ passing, she read of a Senior Circle trip to Australia and New Zealand. Jane was heard saying….”It’s a known fact that we are not growing younger.” She decided it was time for a new adventure. She purchased the tickets needed, bought a new camera and went on her adventure. This trip was Jane’s first trip overseas alone, and provided the backdrop for her next adventure….becoming a published author. Jane was very proud of her accomplishment, of becoming an established Author in 2013. Her book – Wonders Down Under- is a book she published after her travel to Australia and New Zealand.
Jane had a love of gardening and was known all over Roswell for her amazing roses. She loved to create vases full of Roses and take them to her friends, ladies at the Roswell Independent Schools Credit Union, her daughter at work and anywhere else that might enjoy the wonderful smells the roses offered.
Her children and grandchildren have said many times that she made the best homemade pies with Pecan Pie being her specialty. No matter what gathering….if Jane was bringing the pies you knew that they were going to be good. We are sure to hope that there is pie making in heaven, as we all feel she made the best peach and pecan pies ever!!!!!
Another of Jane many talents were her Sour Dough Waffles. If you were ever blessed enough to have a bite of those, no other waffle would ever do. It was a well-known event when ‘Mom’ (AKA Gramma) was making waffles on a Saturday morning, there would be a contest of who could eat the most!!! Good times and Great memories.
The most important part of Jane’s life was her love and faith in The Lord Jesus Christ. It was so important for her to teach all of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren the teachings of Jesus and prayed for each of the people in her life to meet her in heaven right up to the day she passed away. Jane was so excited to be going to heaven and she left strict instructions that there were to be no tears, only a Celebration!!!
Jane will be missed by so many left on this earth. She was an amazing wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. We can’t be sad for her as we KNOW she is up in heaven visiting with all those that she has been missing for so long!!
The family would like to thank the staff at Kindred Hospice for their compassionate care and love that they gave Jane during her last weeks. With a very Special Thanks to the nurses that cared for her: Chelsea, Glen, Bonnie along with the Hospice Pastor Tim. Also, her personal caregivers who were there for Jane when her daughter could not be: Ashley Ramsey and Penny Wood. She was shown much kindness and treated with dignity and care.
