Benji, a pure breed, buff in color, cocker spaniel, he was 16 years, 8mos, 22 days old when I had to have the vet put him to sleep. He was in so much pain, he wouldnt eat anymore, he would only drink water and sleep. When I would carry him outside to relieve himself, he would just sit in the grass and look at me like "mom help me". I would have to prop up his back legs so he could do his "thing".
I bought Benji from a pet store for $250.00, he was 6 mos old. It was a cold night in February of 1991 when we brought him home, little guy was frighten, cold and hungry. We set up his crate and from then on, his crate was always his nest, where Benji would always go for comfort and warmth. Or sometimes he would find space on the couch in the livingroom. During Benji's last couple of years he didnt care much for his crate or the couch anymore, he preferred the old comforter on the livingroom rug or the cool ceramic floor by the front door.
At the age of 1 yr we determined that Benji had a slight heart murmur and was put on Lanoxin and Enalapril for medications for the rest of his life. From then on he was just a typical dog, running, playing with his squeaky toys or fetching his ball. Benji also loved vanilla ice cream cones from McDonalds or Dairy Queen.
Benji also had seizures once a year, which would last less than 5 minutes. The vet wasnt to concerned about them since they didnt last long and they werent very often.
Around the age of 10 it was determined Benji had arthritis in his back. He sometimes wouldnt be able to move his back legs to walk. The vet started him on Cortizone shots, which seemed to cure the problem for awhile. After about a month Benji only needed the shots about once or twice a year.
January of 2006, Benji's arthritis got real bad, the vet prescribed Predisolone, twice or three times a day for his arthritis. He was on Pred for the rest of his life.
About a month ago, Benji began to deteriorate, eating less, being more subdued. Cortizone shots weren't doing the trick anymore nor was the Pred. So as a responsible pet owner, I hope I did the right thing by letting him go. Benji was put to sleep by Dr. Rowland, Benji passed away in my arms at 12:10pm on April 12th, 2007.
I will always love and miss my Benji with all my heart.
