Rules Charleston Death a Suicide
Special to the Journit-Gazette, CHARLESTON, Ill., Mrs Maude Meyer, 73, widow of John W. Meyer, was found dead about 9:30 p. m. Tuesday in her home on East Harrison Street Rd., Charleston. Her sisters, Mrs. George Foote and Mrs. Grace Fortwood, visited the Meyer home Tuesday evening and found Mrs. Meyer on the stairway hanging by a rope.
Coroner H. V. Clark stated that he conducted an inquiry and it was found that Mrs. Meyer's death was due to strangulation with suicidal intent. She probably had been dead since early Tuesday morning, he reported.
Mrs. Meyer was born Sept. 25, 1884, in Owaneco, Ill., a daughter of James and Hester Stokes Echard. On June 3, 1903, at Charleston she was married to John W. Meyer. He died on May 17, 1957.
Besides Mrs. Foote and Mrs. Portwood, of Charleston, she is survived by two other sisters, Mrs. Myrtle Brewer, Charleston, and Mrs. Pearl Alexander, Vandalia, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was a member of the East Harrison Street Church of God.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2:30 p. m. in the Harper-Swickard funeral home with burial in Mound cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after noon Thursday.
