South Bend-Victoria Schwab, 60, passed away on Thursday, April 5, 2018.
Victoria (Vicki) was born on August 15, 1957 in Indianapolis, Indiana to the late John William and Janet Marie (Wood) Gioscio. On May 7, 1983 she married Steven Schwab.
Surviving are her loving husband of nearly 35 years, Steven; son, Dominic, and daughter, Maria; brothers, Frederick Gioscio, John (Elizabeth) Gioscio and Jeffrey (Mary Ann) Gioscio as well as numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members.
Victoria was a graduate of Marian University, Class of 1979. After marriage and starting her family, Victoria went on to complete her Master’s Degree of Theology at Dayton University. She worked for the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend, teaching theology at Marian High School in Mishawaka for 15 years. She was named the Department Head for the Theology Department during the latter portion of her teaching career. Victoria served as the director of Marian High School’s Junior Civitans Club and also served on the board of directors for Habitat For Humanity. She inspired her students toward community service, by which they raised over $55,000 and volunteered their time to build a house for a family in need. She was asked by the Diocese to serve on the Council of Catholic School Teachers, which she did for several years. Victoria was named by one of her students as the teacher who most influenced his academic career when he was nominated as a 2001 Academic All-Star by The Indianapolis Star, the Indiana Department of Education and the Indiana Academic Competitions for Excellence. She was named a Civitan of the Year (2001-2002) by Civitan International’s South Bend Chapter. In 2005, Victoria was honored with Marian University’s Francis and Clare Award for Distinguished Achievement in Peace & Social Justice.
As the current director of Religious Education and Director of Faith Formation and RCIA at St. Thérèse, Little Flower Catholic Church in South Bend, Victoria enjoyed instructing and leading both children and adults in various classes, preparing them to embrace their Catholic faith. She enjoyed doing crafts, was an avid gardener, and loved to travel, recently achieving her life-long dream of touring Italy on a pilgrimage. Victoria cherished her family, focusing all of her efforts to their wellbeing and devoting herself to her children, whom she loved unconditionally.
Visitation will be on Thursday, April 12 from 4 to 8 p.m. with a Rosary to be prayed at 7:30 p.m. at Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th Street, Mishawaka. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Friday, April 13 at 11 a.m., at St. Monica Catholic Church, 222 W. Mishawaka Ave, Mishawaka, IN 46545. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery, Mishawaka.
