Una Marcene Heikes was born on October 25, 1922, West of Obert, Nebraska, to William Chester and Edna (Joyce) Heikes. Una married Richard W. (Dick) Johnson on August 15, 1944, in rural Obert NE. Dick preceded Una in death on May 24, 2005. Into their marriage and home 2 children were born, Thomas Lyle, and Patricia Fae.
Una spent her growing up years in NE Nebraska. In 1932, Una and her Dad, her brothers Ralph & Lawrence and sister Mildred moved to the Breslin Place by the Missouri River, on the Nebraska side, just to the west of the Vermillion/ New Castle Bridge location. The Original house has been moved back south as the river cut into the Nebraska river bank; you can still see that farmstead today, as you cross the bridge. Una attended high school at Wayne State Teachers College, graduated in 1941, and attended National Business College in Sioux City, IA. In March 1942, Una started a job with the Soil Conservation Office, in Wayne NE. The fall of 1942, Una accepted a position of Deputy County Treasurer, in the Cedar County Treasurers office, in Hartington, NE.
Una began working at the USD in Vermillion in April of 1960, in the State Wide Educational Media Services office. She transferred to the USD Film Library, and retired from USD, after 30 years, in September of 1990.
Una was a member of Hillside Community Church, in more recent years she attended First Baptist Church in Vermillion.
Una was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, in November of 2015.
She will be missed greatly, by her children, and their spouses, Tom and Diana Johnson, of Henderson NE, Patty and Roger Busenitz, of Newton, KS, 5 grandchildren and their spouses, 16 great-grandchildren; one brother-in- law, Mel Larson; numerous nieces and nephews.
One very special niece, Jean Ann Schram, who gave sacrificially of her time and energy to assist and provide nursing care for Mom in our absence, providing comfort and support in so many ways, not only to Mom but to our family as well, especially these last few months, weeks and days!!
