Russell was born on September 15, 1929, in Marshalltown, Iowa, the son of John and Flora Goodman. He was raised and educated in the Union and Whitten, Iowa areas and graduated from the Whitten High School. Throughout his lifetime Russell lived in the Union area and worked for Fisher Controls for over forty years before his retirement.

He enjoyed reading the Bible and spending time at church, the outdoors, hunting, and collecting guns. He was an active member of the Whitten Community Church.

Russell is survived by his son Paul Goodman of Kellogg; his brother John (Cora) Goodman of Whitten; his sister Darlene (Frank) Paglia of Marshalltown; four grandchildren, Anna (Jamie) Johnson of Tama, Michelle Goodman of Tama, Justin Goodman of Mt. Pleasant, and Jeremy Goodman of Arkansas; and six great-grandchildren.

Russell was preceded in death by his parents; his son John; his brother Ernie; and his daughter-in-law Sheryl.
