Gilbert was the son of Eugene Bell Morphew and Annie Elizabeth Williams. He was born in the Tidwell Community of Hunt County Texas. He ran a small store in the Tidwell community in the 1940's. He married Ethel Imogene Easley in Odessa TX. He worked in the oil fields while living in Odessa TX. After moving back to Hunt County in 1959 he owned and operated Morphew's Fina Station on Stonewall Street in Greenville Texas. They bought a farm near Wolfe City, Hunt, Texas in 1968. After retirement he and his wife Ethel Imogene Easley Morphew built a home there and raised cattle.

He was a shy, quiet man. I never heard him speak an unkind word about anyone. I never heard him sing.....except when he was on the tractor mowing. You could hear " Oh how I love Jesus" over the sound of the mower. " Because he first loved me " would come ringing across the field. He never knew that we could hear him.

Gilbert never had children of his own but he was a wonderful step-father and claimed us as his own.
