Orval Price Sparkman, 93, died on February 18, 2018 at Cullman Regional Medical Center. He was born in 1924 in the Oak Ridge Community, west of Hartselle, to Clarence Washington and Lillie Legg Sparkman.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 pm, Thursday, February 22, 2018 at Moss Chapel Methodist Church, of Hartselle. No visitation is scheduled.

Reverend Harold Thompson and Mr. Blake Tanner will conduct the service. Mr. Sparkman will be buried alongside his family.

Mr. Sparkman was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Leona Marie Sparkman Mitchell and brothers, Julius Cleo "Chip" Sparkman, Bobby Ray Sparkman, Billy Clarence Sparkman, Ronald Lewis Sparkman and Ronnie Eugene Sparkman.

He is survived by one brother, William Coleman Sparkman (Joanne) of Smithville, TN and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Sparkman attended Oak Ridge school and graduated from Morgan County High School. After high school, he worked with the Goodyear Mill in Decatur and he enrolled at Florence Teachers College, where he graduated. He taught at Oak Ridge School and at Hartselle Elementary School. He often spoke of how much he valued the influence of Principal F.E. Burleson in those years.

While teaching, he worked in the evenings as an X-ray technician at Dr. Claude Lavender's clinic in Hartselle. In the late 1950's, he and partners bought the clinic. Under his leadership, the clinic grew into a modern, 120 bed hospital. He attributed that success to the skilled and caring team of doctors, nurses and departments he assembled during those years. Mr. Sparkman and his partners sold the hospital to what would become the Hospital Corporation of America in 1973. It was one of the first acquisitions of HCA.

After the sale of the hospital, Mr. Sparkman farmed for a time in Oak Ridge. He opened the Maison Morgan department store in Hartselle. He later moved to Fairhope, Alabama, where he pursued his interest in landscaping and nurseries. He was a member of Fairhope Seven Day Adventist Church.

Memorial donations may be made to the Moss Chapel Methodist Church cemetery fund.

The family would like to express much appreciation to the staff of Summerford Nursing Home. They demonstrated significant skill and caring during Mr. Sparkman's time there.
