While living in Alton, Violet met Lester Mertz and they were married in Lawrence, Oct. 9, 1946. Violet and Lester made Salina their home in 1949 when Lester joined Kennedy & Coe.

Violet was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church, and the Salina Country Club. She served on the boards of the YWCA, and the Downtown Lioness Club. She regularly volunteered at the hospital and as financial secretary for her church. She was an avid bowler and won the coveted triple score patch and big four conversion award. She and Lester enjoyed traveling together, visiting Africa, Australia, Europe, Hawaii, and many family members across the U.S.
