Joseph Sherman Kenville was a son of the Joseph & America Kenville family of Quail Hollow Ranch near Santa Cruz California. He married Mary Anna Cole in 1901, and they worked a ranch in Paradise, Oregon for many years. They had five children: Hurburt, Violet, Mabel, Ceciel, and General. Sometime in the late twenties, after his son Hurburt died unexpectedly, the farm failed. The bank in town agreed to give him a loan, but he turned them down, boarded a train and was never heard from again.

MaryAnna wrote letters for many years, hoping for news, but none of his family ever heard from him. It is likely he is buried in an unmarked grave somewhere.

Joseph's first wife wasn't up for the difficult life in Paradise, Oregon and took their only child and returned, presumably, to her family.
