Samuel is believed to be the son of Charles Daniel Goolsby and Emily Amanda Anthony-Scott. In 1888 Sam married Georgianna Cooper. They had 11 children together--William Albert, Margaret Roselee, Samuel Ross, Frances Osabell, Ethan Loveless, Anna Velma, Ella, Irene, Alton, Gladys, and Charles. While his wife was expecting their 11th child, Sam died in a tragic accident. He was walking past Palos Mine delivering mail when there was a mine explosion. He was thrown about 30 feet into the nearby river and died from the burns he suffered.
