Jimmy Powell went off with his father into military service, including the Civil War, for seven years from the age of five in 1855 until the father was killed in Battle of Shiloh. There is written by his granddaughter, Lena M. Bean Merrill, an astounding account ~ backed up by many documents ~ of how he'd been nurtured by mammies, accidentally sliced himself in the eye with a Bowie knife while trying to get his pony loose to escape marauding Indians, and was helped by Governor Washburn (Maine) to get home to The Forks from Tennessee via New Jersey after his father's death.
Married Lizzie Turner Bates on 02OCT1870; they had eleven children.
The Bean Yard Cemetery was part of Jonathan Bean's farm and is on Mountain Road overlooking the Kennebec River at The Forks, Maine.
