Early on he left home and moved to Hadley, Lawrence County, Illinois. He enlisted in the military January 1, 1864 and was a member of Co. A, 63rd Illinois Volunteer Infantry. He mustered in at Huntsville, Alabama February 10, 1864. He mustered out July 13, 1865 at Louisville, Kentucky with the rank of Corporal.
After leaving the military, he moved to Harrison County, Missouri where his father, Christopher James Anthony, and the rest of the family had relocated from Ohio. There he studied to get his teaching certificate and became a school teacher. He taught school for about three years.
In October, 1868, William Anthony married Delana "Della" Ainslie of Worth County, Missouri. They made their home in Worth County and William began a dry goods business. William and Della Anthony had five children: Charles Irvin (1871-1873) who died in Missouri; Luella "Ella" (1872-1939); Edwin "Edd" (1873-1908); Alta (1876-); and Nellie Ainslie (1880-).
In about 1885, the family moved to Burlingame, Osage County, Kansas and William opened a dry goods store which became well known in the area.
William N. Anthony died March 29, 1892 at the age of 48.
