Second son of Bishop Rudolph Dubs and his first wife Emma Wabnitz, he appears with his parents in early census records under the nickname 'Ralph.' He was also named as 'Ralph' in the list of surviving heirs of his mother in her 1886 probate record.

Dr. Dubs was born during the time his father was serving his pastorate at the Grandview Evangelical Church, of which his mother's family were members.

His parents later moved to Cleveland, Ohio where his younger siblings were born.

Like his brothers, Dr. Dubs attended Oberlin College (1883-1887) in Ohio. He received his medical degree from the University of Berlin in 1893.

He returned to the U.S. and settled at Chicago where he set up his practice, and there married Martha L. Hoeltz on 16 Sep 1896.

Rudolph and Martha were the parents of two children: Rena M. and Almer Rudolph.

Dr. Dubs died of pneumonia at his residence on Belmont Avenue. His death record indicates he was interred at this cemetery.

Dr. Dubs was survived by his wife and two children; his father Bishop Dubs and stepmother Amanda (nee Carothers) Dubs; and by his brothers, Rev. Dr. Charles Newton Dubs of Changsha, China; Edwin A. Dubs of Cleveland, OH; Dr. Jesse Dubs of Los Angeles; Alford Wabnitz Dubs of Waukegan, IL; and half-brother Martin Carothers Dubs of Harrisburg, PA.

After his death, his widow moved to nearby Barrington, Illinois where she was enumerated with their children in early 1920. Their son Almer died at Barrington later that year.

By 1930 Martha had moved to Los Angeles, California as had their married daughter, Rena (Warren) Plagge.
