Marie was born on Dec. 26, 1911 on a farm SW of Vivian, later moving to near the home place in Sioux Township where she attended the Swinson country school. She attended her first year of high school at Canistota, S.D., returning to the farm, then worked her way through Presho High School by taking a job as a housekeeper at the Ida Mallett Clinic in Presho. She married Gus Wendt on Dec. 16, 1932 and from this union three boys were born. They moved the family to Craig, Iowa in 1936, eventually returning to Lyman Country and Vivian in 1947, operating a farm/ranch until 1973.

After the death of her husband Gus in 1966, Marie remained on the ranch six years before moving to Pierre in 1973. Marie quickly adjusted to city life by joining the Lutheran Memorial Church, VFW, Eastern Star, Senior Citizens, Republican Women and eventually took a job at the C. Allen Jewelry store where she remained for 15 years. She also was the "picture-taker" for the Senior Center for many years. Some of Marie's many hobbies were; crocheting, knitting, cooking, making clothes, card playing, photography, traveling, Pierre Players and volunteering wherever she was needed. She was especially proud to have served as a hostess for the annual Christmas Tree display at the state Capitol for many years. Marie was a regular medal winner in the annual Senior Olympics competition.

Marie is survived by sons: Lonis (Lois) of Vivian, Bill of Pierre, Bob (Lil) of Laramie, Wyo., ten grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and five great-great grandchildren and long-time special friends and neighbors, Laverne and Rudy Ellwanger, Henrietta Harvey and Marlene and Vic Mahutga.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Gus, a baby daughter in 1943, a sister Mae and four brothers, Ralph, George, Richard and Clarence and sister-in-laws Bessie, Fritz, Betty, Vera and Laverne.

Marie always expressed her love for the Vivian Community and until giving up driving at age 93, was a fixture at almost every community activity.

Memorials may be directed to the Lutheran Memorial Church in Pierre, Vivian Lutheran Church and the Pierre Senior Citizens.
