GEO. HEMINGWAY SUCCUMBS HERE EARLY TUESDAY

George L. Hemingway of this city, 84 years of age, died at the Memorial hospital Tuesday morning, June 14, at 2:30 o'clock. He had been in poor health for many years.

George Lawrence Hemingway was born in Wisconsin on May 24, 1854. He came to Minnesota 78 years ago and lived at Owatonna. Forty years ago he came to Waseca and engaged in the hotel business. He was proprietor of the Stevens Hotel.

He was married to Miss Diana Webb at Medford in 1880. One son, Merritt Webb, was born to this union. Mrs. Hemingway passed away when Merritt was 3 1/2 years of age. Mr. Hemingway was married the second time to Mrs. Minnie E. Schafer at Geneva. One son, George W., was born to them. He now lives at Huron, South Dakota.

Mr. Hemingway came from a family of five brothers and four sisters. One sister, Mrs. Will Lansing of Kasson, 82 years of age, survives. Another sister, Mrs. Port Sheldon, died two years ago at Gentry, Arkansas at the age of 95 years. Mrs. Hemingway died three years ago.

Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon, June 16, at the home of M. W. Hemingway, 515 East Elm Ave., at two o'clock. Rev. Edward Lee, pastor of the Methodist church, will officiate and interment will be made in the Geneva cemetery beside his wife. Ralph Clayton, accompanied by Mrs. E. J. Graben, will sing "Nearer My God To Thee" and "The Old Rugged Cross."

Pall bearers will be five nephews, Dick Hemingway of Kasson, Edwin Hemingway, Harry Stout and Earl Stout of Owatonna and George Cram of Waterville, and a brother-in-law, Will Gahagan of Ellendale.



Notes from Shirley Hemingway: George's first wife was Diana (1857-1885). His second wife was Minnie E. Gahagan Schafer (1863-1935) and they were married May 18,1887.

His parents were Josiah and Elizabeth Lawrence Hemingway. Siblings included Mary Getman, Joseph, Calvin, Caroline Sheldon, Aaron, Sarah Jane Stout, Clinton, and Rilla Lansing. (2 additional brothers died as infants)

George's death certificate listed his occupation as "retired salesman" & cause of death: senility & years of chronic colitis.
