He was a lifelong resident of East Stone Gap. Billy was a retired coal miner with the Westmoreland Coal Co., having 28 years of service, and a member of the U.M.W.A. District #20, Local #1407. He was a U. S. Army Veteran, serving in peacetime Korea. He was a member of the Big Springs Baptist Church in the Crackers Neck community.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Evelyn Qualls; and his parents, James Garland Qualls and Nellie "Nell" Mae (Shupe) Qualls.
Billy is survived by his daughter, Cindy Mosier and husband, Randy of Big Stone Gap, VA; his son, Richard Qualls and wife, Kristie of Duffield, VA; three grandchildren, Hollie (Jacob) Meade, Lauren Qualls and Zack Qualls; one great granddaughter, Maddie Meade; one brother, Ted (Lenettie) Qualls of Clinton, NC; three sisters, Jean Horner of Clinton, NC, Mary Lou (Robert) Stanley of Lanham, MD and Betty Sue (Don) Osborne of Bristol, TN; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.
The family will receive friends from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at Holding Funeral Home (17 E. 3rd St., N.) in Big Stone Gap. Military graveside rites and committal services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Riverview Cemetery in East Stone Gap. Family and friends are asked to assemble at
Holding Funeral Home by 1:30 p.m. to go in procession to the cemetery.
