Winfield “Scott” Dowling – born 1851, Charleston, IL. Died 1895. Buried Mound Cemetery. Named after General Winfield Scott of the Mexican and Civil Wars, was the son of Thomas Shepherd Dowling (1808-1902) a Mexican War Veteran from Charleston, and his second wife, Sarah “Jane” (Hanks) Dowling (1822-1907) who was a daughter of Dennis Friend Hanks and Sarah Elizabeth “Betsy” (Johnston) Hanks. He was married on Oct. 7, 1877 to Effie Jane Parker in Charleston. She was born June 5, 1859 in Charleston and died March 16, 1945 in Mattoon, Coles County, Illinois. She was the daughter of Jerome Bonaparte Parker and his wife, Sarah Jane (Stroube) Parker. Scott and Effie had seven children: William “Harvey” Dowling, Sr., Thomas “Tom” Dowling, Harriet “Hattie” Dowling (later Briesler), Russell Alger Dowling, Scottie Dowling (later Robertson), Dennis “Michael” Dowling, and an un-named infant.
