Mildred Bittle Joynes peacefully went to be with the Lord Feb. 1, 2006. Born in Como, N.C., to Reuben Albert Bittle and Claire Wise Bittle Dec. 31, 1914, she was raised in Franklin, Va., and received her registered nurse degree from Norfolk Memorial Hospital. On Sept. 15, 1936, she married Walter Cooper Joynes Jr. During their marriage they lived in Norfolk, Richmond, Briarcliff Manor, N.Y., and Virginia Beach. She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Walter C. Jr.; her son, William Albert Joynes; grandson, William A. Joynes Jr.; and great-granddaughter, Cassidy Passler. She leaves her son, Walter Cooper Joynes III and his wife Linda A. Joynes; a daughter-in-law, Christine Joynes; six grandchildren, Walter C. Joynes IV, Kelly A. Joynes, Jill LaRoque and her husband Brett, April J. Edney and her husband Jeffrey and Kirk R. Joynes; and seven great-grandchildren. Most of all, she loved her family and was a devoted wife and mother. She also enjoyed fishing, gardening and playing bridge and was a member of King's Daughters Circle. The last 10 years of her life were happily spent at Atlantic Shores Retirement Center. A chapel service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel, by the Rev. Warren Withrow and James Christopher. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
