Jack Selwin Bowen, 74, of Grand Island passed away on Saturday, Feb. 3, 2018, at CHI Health St. Francis.

A memorial Service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home Chapel, with full military honors following the service. Chaplain Tim Wegenast will be officiating. Burial will be in the Shelton Cemetery at a later date.

Jack was born Jan. 11, 1944, to Edwin and Louise (Westover) Bowen at Belfast, Maine. He grew up and received his education in Belfast. Jack played many sports in his early life, including baseball, basketball and swimming. He went on to play semi-pro basketball with the Rockland Rockets in Rockland, Maine.

He married his childhood sweetheart, Mary Hall, on Dec. 3, 1960, at Belfast, Maine.

Jack joined the United States Army in 1961 and was Honorably Discharged in 1965, serving during the Vietnam War. He was a member of the 101st Airborne.

His military training helped to pave his career path. Jack became a U.S. Marshal in Maine and a police officer in rural Nebraska, and retired as chief of police for the Shelton Police Department.

Jack’s wife, Mary, passed away on Nov. 19, 2007. He later married JoAnn Hypes on Dec. 31, 2010, at Grand Island.


Jack loved traveling the country on his motorcycle, golfing, swimming, touring museums, playing cards, especially pitch and poker, and spending time with his family.

He was a member of Grand Island Peace Lutheran Church, American Legion Post 53, the VFW, Legion Riders of St. Paul and Alcoholics Anonymous.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, JoAnn, of Grand Island; his sons, Scott (Terry) Bowen of Belfast, Maine, and Troy Bowen of Denver, Colo.; two stepchildren, Ashley (Jason) Manning of Shelton and Wayne Smith of Grand Island; grandchildren, Jack Muegerl, Kristina Burmood, Tyler Bowen, Stormy Bowen, Ty Bowen, Lainy Bowen, Cooper Bowen and Addison Manning; and great-grandchildren, Madisen, Preston, Brayden, Payton, Jaci and Owen.

He is also survived by three brothers in arms, Roy Deen, Bud Edwards and Neil Miller.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Mary; and his daughter, Lori Whitefoot.
