"Sam" was a veteran of World War II-U.S. Navy and a member of American Legion Post #54. He was a former bricklayer at LTV Steel and a member of B.A.C. Local #6. Sam was a member of the Hobart Jaycess, he was an amateur radio operator, an avid Cubs fan, football fan, fisherman and golfer. He will be missed by all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Anna, brothers, Merle and Ramon, sister, Phyllis, son, Martin and grandson, Samuel Kuenn.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years: Marian (nee Bodin) Pence of Hobart; 2 sons, Mark (Suzzette) Pence of Lake Station, Joel (Vickie) Pence of Winamac; daughter, Judy (Kelly) Kuenn of Holiday, FL; grandsons: Kyle Kuenn of Palm Harbor, FL, Chuck Bennett of Rensselaer, IN; granddaughters: Stephanie (Keith Phillips) Kuenn of Chicago, IL, Nicole Pence of Valparaiso, IN and Debbie (Tim) Van Deraa of Winamac; great grandson, Cody of Valparaiso; sister, Carol (Peter) Cusumano; many loving nieces and nephews.
Funeral servcie will be held on Saturday, September 16, 2006, at 11:00 a.m. at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 5375 Harrison St., Merrillville, IN, Rev. Larry Gember officiating. Services will terminate at the church with private burial at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Hobart. Friends may visit with the family on Friday from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Burns Funeral Home, 701 E. 7th Street. Hobart, IN. Sam will lie in state at the church on Saturday from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. (time of service) Contributions may be made to St. Anthony's Hospice Center in Crown Point or to Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Merrillville.
