Zabel Builds His Own Car.

The following article concerning Marvin Zabel, son of Mr. and Mrs. L. Zabel of Onaga, appeared in a recent issue of Kansas City Star:

"Marvin L. Zabel, 2700 So. 22nd St., Wyandotte County, a 35 year-old machinist who builds giant highway trailers in the daytime, has constructed a rear-engine, three wheeled motor car that speeds over 50 miles an hour and logs 50 miles to the gallon.

The machine represents an investment of only $300 and about 6 months of spare time in his basement shop. The principal ingredients are an Austin engine and transmission, three Crosley wheels and tires, the hoods of two 1936 Fords and some bar and sheet steel. For the last month Zabel has been driving the home-made car to and from his work at the Fruehauf trailer factory in the Fairfax district, while his wife, Mrs. Eva Zabel, has used their 1946 Plymouth to take two children to school and drive on other errands. Zabel road-tested the car a few days ago by driving to Lawrence and back with two of his three children, Carolyn Jean, 10 and Stanley Kent 7, as passengers. The single-seater weighing 1000 lbs., preformed to perfection during the 80-mile drive.

The sight of the sleek contraption, with only one wheel in the rear, prompted four cars drivers to pull ahead of Zabel and request him to halt so that they might examine the car.

The front and rear sections of the car are made of two hoods from 1936 Fords and the sides of sheet metal. The windshield assembly is from 1937 Ford and the seat and back from a 1941 Willys. The steering wheel and related apparatus are from a 1941 Ford. The car is equipped with a standard shift.

Last summer Zabel put together a small 3-wheeled tractor from two motor car wheels, a wheelbarrow wheel, some angle iron and a 6-horsepower engine. With the aid of proper attachments, Zabel mows the grass on his 2 ½ acre tract, plows gardens for himself and neighbors, and bulldozes excess snow from the street in front of his home.
