PEKIN ~ LaVerne Elizabeth Howell, 82, of Pekin, passed away at 9:38 p.m. Friday, February 2, 2018 at UnityPoint Health-Proctor in Peoria.

Born December 24, 1935 in Pekin to Walter Edward and Alice (Renner) Zessin, she married Kenneth Eugene Howell on March 21, 1954 in Pekin.

Surviving are three sons, Roy E. (Vicki) Howell of Torrington, Wyoming, Edward A. Howell and Larry A. Howell, both of Pekin; one daughter, Gloria J. (Larry) Crawford of Pekin; six grandchildren, Jason (Shannon) Crawford of Pekin, Jesse (Michelle) Crawford of Morton, Tyson Howell of Pekin, Brittany Howell, of Torrington, Wyoming, Brianne (Cameron) Snell of Loveland, Colorado and Michael Schuler of Torrington, Wyoming and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Richard Allen Howell on April 26, 1986 in Pekin and one sister, Lois V. Beever.

LaVerne was a 1953 graduate of Pekin Community High School.

She worked for Ray Dennison Chevrolet in Pekin as a cashier and bookkeeper for 11 years, retiring in 1997. LaVerne previously worked at Emerson Pontiac and Cohen’s Furniture.

LaVerne was a devoted member of St. Paul United Church of Christ in Pekin, where she was a member of the Women’s Fellowship, assisted with funeral dinners and faithfully helped set up for communion.

She was a fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and was also a member of Compassionate Friends in Pekin.

Her funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, February 9, 2018 at St. Paul United Church of Christ. The Rev. Dr. Brian Byrne will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin, and also from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. Friday at the church. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery in Pekin.
