Born in Windsor, N.C., Mr. Speller was a retired supervisor with Norfolk Naval Air Station after 33 years of service. He was of the Pentecostal faith and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Mr. Speller is survived by his wife, Clara Speller; a daughter, Lillie Booker; four sons, Charlie Speller Jr. and the Rev. Bernell L. Speller Sr., all of Norfolk, Ruben D. Speller of Pound, Va., and Reginald L. Speller of Bridgeton, N.J.; two brothers, Jimmy Speller Sr. of Norfolk and Richard Speller of Virginia Beach; a son-in-law, Mitchell N. Booker of Norfolk; two daughters-in-law, Bobby Speller of Bridgeton and Alma H. Speller of Norfolk; 18 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at C.H. Mason Memorial Church of God in Christ, Norfolk, with the Rev. Bernell Speller Sr. and the Rev. David B. Williams, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake. Family and friends will assemble at noon Saturday at 4100 Powhatan Ave., Norfolk, for the procession. Metropolitan Funeral Service, Berkley Avenue, is handling arrangements.
