William Barron Stronach, Jr., age 85, of Fairlane Drive, died Saturday, June 1, 2002 at Caldwell County Hospice. He was born January 15, 1917 in Altamont, NC, to the late William Barron Stronach Sr. and Lydia Leach Stronach.

Mr. Stronach was retired director of the City of Lenoir Parks and Recreation Dept., the first Curator and director of the Caldwell Historical Museum and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Lenoir where he served as Deacon and SundaySchool Teacher. Mr. Stronach was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII. He was a graduate of U.N.C. with graduate studies at New York University, NC State at Davidson, and California Poly-Technical College. He received a B.S. degree in Public Health and a Masters degree in Parks and Recreation Administration. He was captain of the University of North Carolina Freshman Boxing Team, member of the freshman football team, varsity boxing and football teams. He was the University's AAU Middleweight Champion in 1936 and was one of the first inductees of the Caldwell County Sports Hall of Fame.

Following his public health training, he was employed by the Division of County Health Work, North Carolina State Board of Health as Sanitarian in the Buncombe County Health Dept., Clay, Cherokee, Graham, Burke, and Caldwell Health Districts. Mr. Stronach was the first Director of Parks and Recreation for the City of Hickory, NC. He left Hickory to accept the Directors position of Parks and Recreation for the City of High Point and in 1958, Stronach accepted the position of Director of Parks and Recreation for the City of Anaheim, CA, where he served until he accepted the post as Parks and Recreation Director for the City of Lenoir in 1962. He was a member of the N.C. Recreation Society, American Institute of Park Executives, Caldwell County Mental Health Assoc., Piedmont Boy Scout Council, District Commissioner Caldwell Scout Council, Board of Directors Catawba Valley Girl Scout Council, Blue Ridge Economic Development Assoc., American Legion Post 29, Past President of the Lenoir Rotary Club and received the Distinguished Service Award in 1974. He also received the Distinguished Service Award from the Institute of Park Executives in 1974. Mr. Stronach was Chairman Western Piedmont Council of Governments Recreation Commission and a charter member and Board of Directors of the Overmountain Victory Trail Assoc., Charter member and President Caldwell County Chapter OVTA, Grand Marshall Overmountain Victory Trail March in 1977. Mr. Stronach was very active in all OVTA and many other environmental issues and projects for Caldwell, Burke and surrounding counties.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Mildred Shuford Stronach of the home; one son, William Barron Stronach III and his wife Susan Medlock Stronach of Lenoir; three daughters, Mrs. Don (Mildred) Eastep of Livingston, Montana, and Mrs. Bren (Katherine) Petar and Mrs. Ron (Anne Ellis) Cataraha, both of Santa Anna, CA; one sister, Mrs. Lydia Vanhorn of Altamont, NC; two brothers, Angus Stronach of Marion, NC and Alexander (Sandy) Stronach of Clearwater, FL; fourteen grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 5, 2002 at the First Presbyterian Church of Lenoir, conducted by Dr. Rev. Gerrit Scott Dawson.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Caldwell Historical Society, P.O. Box 2165, Lenoir, NC 28645, and Caldwell County Hospice, 902 Kirkwood Street, Lenoir, NC 28645.
